| Abstract | The purpose of this book is to assist undergraduates in discovering basic phenomena of rhetorical situations and rhetorical talk and in interpreting those phenomena socially. The nature of oral rhetoric and its criticism is treated in chapters one and two. Chapters three and four deal with how obvious and less obvious ideas may be espied and interpreted. Chapter five explores some ways by which structure and form modify listeners' perceptions of verbalized thought and feeling. Chapters six, seven, and eight examine the further modifying potentialities of oral style. The influence of nonverbal phenomena is the subject of chapter nine, and chapter ten treats special problems which confront critics of rhetorical speech. Unabridged texts of eight speeches appear in appendixes A and B. Appendix B also contains two critiques in which critical methods suggested in the text have been applied. (WR) |
